Where to go in New Zealand

If you're keen to check out what New Zealand has to offer, here are a few of our top places for British & Irish Lions fans to visit. But there is so much more to see. Tourism New Zealand can also guide you on how best to take in this beautiful country.

For the active and adventurous out there, this is New Zealand’s tallest mountain. Mountain walks lead to alpine tarns, herb fields and spectacular glacier views.
Experience the best of the Maori world with cultural performances, ta moko tattoo experts, and healthy and delicious traditional foods. Rotorua is famous for its natural hot springs, shooting geysers, bubbling mud pools, and the local indigenous people who live amongst the geothermal activity and use the boiling water to cook, bathe and warm their homes.
French Missionaries planted grape vines in the Hawke’s Bay soil back in 1838 for their own table and sacramental wine, and now, Hawke’s Bay is at the forefront of New Zealand’s wine industry which exports well over a million litres all over the world every year.
New Zealand’s dramatic scenery plays the mythical world of Middle-earth on the big screen in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogy. Many activities and attractions offer the chance to see the film locations for yourself. For your own Middle-earth adventure, daily tours are available to visit the original Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and The Hobbit films.
Lake Taupo is New Zealand's great lake, source of the mighty Huka Falls, and beating heart of an active volcanic region. Explore the largest fresh water lake in Australasia, created in an ancient volcanic eruption. The region is full of natural thermal springs, bubbling mud and steam vents.
Carved by glaciers during the Ice Age, Milford Sound is breath-taking in any season. A popular day trip from Queenstown, Milford Sound’s dramatic landscapes can be seen by kayak, boat cruise, from the air in scenic flights and on foot via the Milford Track.
Known as the best sighted fishing grounds in the world, New Zealand has no shortage of pristine streams, rivers and lakes. The central North Island and the top of the South Island have built their reputations as the world’s best wild trout fisheries, but further south you’ll find the most diverse waters, from glorious rivers teeming with wild fish to monumental glacial formed lakes ringed by native forest.
A short drive from Hamilton, the Waitomo Cave system is an ancient subterranean world in the heart of New Zealand’s central North Island. Waitomo - meaning water hole in Māori - is a small rural settlement where underground limestone formations are evidence of the land rising from the ocean floor 30 million years ago.
